Mayan – Rulers and Fashion

We looked at the responsibilities of Mayan rulers and were very happy to see some city states had female rulers. The girls were especially interested in the strange fashion ideas the Mayans had. The Mayans thought a pointed and flattened head was beautiful and so parents would press their babies heads between boards which over time made their foreheads slope up and backwards. They also thought crossed eyes were beautiful. Parents would hang tiny balls in front of their children’s eyes in the hope that their eyes would become permanently crossed.

Headdresses and masks were very important to the Mayans. We thought about designing our own using craft supplies or even doing it in bread. But in the end the girls did it using fruit which doubled as a pudding for tea!
