With living in Saddleworth, it was only a matter of time before brass banding started to take over our lives. Peggy joined Dobcros Youth Band in 2018 playing the cornet. Agatha wasn’t too far behind on tenor horn. Peggy has since moved onto the tuba – a half-size version which we have christened “Tony”. The band provides an unbelievably supportive and friendly environment for children of all ages to learn to play brass instruments, as well as take part in concerts and performances, whilst develop some very strong friendships.

In September 2022, Agatha successfully auditioned to move into the top tier of the Dobcross set-up, becoming a member of the Youth Band (generally for ages 11-18). As well as giving her more opportunities to perform more challenging pieces to a much wider audience, it also means she is now the proud owner of a very smart blazer.

Both girls had the opportunity to perform at Uppermill Civic Hall as part of Saddleworth’s commemorations of those who made the ultimate sacrifice; performing alongside another local institution, the Saddleworth Male Voice Choir. The combination of brass and voice was quite overwhelming, with more than a few tears shed as we remembered those who laid down their lives in order to preserve our freedoms.

The following day all sections of the band gathered at Dobcross Band Club before marching down to Holy Trinity Church, by way of the war memorial on Woods Lane. After observing the minute’s silence the Youth Band joined the congregation in the church, performing hymns and The Last Post as part of the service.

I found these handy cards on Twinkl (like flashcards with the answers on the back) which she ... Read more

My tuba Tony and I spent a week at the National School Symphony Orchestra at Malvern College. This is what I thought about the experience. Spoiler alert: I loved it, and can't wait to go again next year.
