Sometimes, hours spent on Facebook can be productive! I spotted an event on Facebook which I thought we’d enjoy – a Bat Walk in Worsley Woods. This event was free (although donations of £1.50 each were suggested to cover the cost of batteries) and was run by the Salford Ranger Team (Salford Ranger Team | Facebook). They run various sessions throughout the year on local history, wildlife and wildflowers.
We were each given a bat detector and, after some helpful advice from the Ranger, we went in search of bats! Joe the Ranger was so knowledgeable and happily answered all the girls’ questions as we walked through the woods and to the shore of a lake. As it got darker, the bats became easier to see as well as hear on the detectors. They really are remarkable creatures and now we understand a lot more about the bats that we see in our back garden in late evening.
I can highly recommend this walk. We had great fun, had some exercise in the dark and got to learn lots of facts too. The only downside was that we had two quite grumpy girls the next morning as they didn’t get to bed until after 10pm. But it was worth it!
