This week’s forest school session was a little different. We went to a sheep farm to meet this year’s new additions and to learn about what farmers need to do over the lambing season. Sally, the owner of Higher Plainsteads Farm, was our host and she was great with the children. She offers free farm tours for groups of children and I know of individual families who have been to visit too.
Needless to say, there were lots of awws at all the cute lambs, especially at the ones which were just a few hours old. Sally very openly answered any questions the children and us adults had; her knowledge is just phenomenal.
When we headed outside, we met last year’s lambs which looked enormous; they grow so much in a year.
I found this visit showed us a very balanced view of farming. Life and death were openly discussed, together with the joys and hardship that come along with being a farmer. A farmer’s life was not sugar-coated yet Peggy came away considering it a career option. Thank you Sally for such an amazing visit.
