I organised a day of two halves for our local home ed families to celebrate the end of the academic year (for those that follow the school year). We spent a few hours at Saddleworth Museum taking part in a workshop and then, after a picnic in the park, we had our very own sports day. The weather was fabulous, if anything a bit too hot, which made the day extra special.
The museum workshop was a brilliant mix of hands-on activities and open-ended exploration of the exhibits. This museum is all about our local area and the villages many of us live in. We started off with a “Guess the item” activity where we had to work out what some objects were used for over a hundred years ago; this certainly got us thinking! We then looked at some slides of what the villages used to look like. So many things were still recognisable a hundred years later, even by the youngest of the children. The workshop ended with us having exclusive use of the museum so we could learn all about the textile industry that thrived here pre-WW1.
After a morning of learning and a lovely picnic in the park together, we got cracking with our sports afternoon. There was plenty of free-time with toys we’d all brought and then we had a sack race, egg-and-spoon race followed by a few rounders matches. It was such a relaxed afternoon where the children and adults all got to know each other better. I think we’ll do the same again in 2022!
