Aggie has long expressed an interest in being either a midwife or a doctor, so I contacted my friend Larissa, who is a midwife, to see if she’d have a chat about her job with Aggie. We were so excited when Larissa not only said she’d have a chat but also invited us over to the birth centre she works at for a tour.
What an amazing facility! These birth centres don’t exist round where we live but I think they should be compulsory everywhere! You can bring along as many people as you want to the birth and you have an entire room, including a birthing pool, and en-suite to yourself. There are double doors out onto a garden and you’re welcome to stay there as long as you wish after the birth to get all the support you need. Amazing!
Larissa talked us through what her week looked like and she told so many brilliant stories about experiences she’d had. She shared about what studying midwifery was like at university and all the different types of roles midwives can have, both in clinical and research fields.
Larissa taught Aggie how to measure blood pressure (without an electronic monitor) and then she had a go at using the resuscitation equipment. Aggie very skilfully brought a tube of wipes back to life; an improvised replacement for a baby doll!
We absolutely loved our two hours with Larissa. We can’t thank her enough for giving her precious time so generously. Her immense passion for her job was inspiring. Never mind about Aggie, I want to become a midwife now!
