Destroying rhododendrons with The National Trust

Published

On what can only be described as a totally wild day, we ventured up in the moors above Marsden to volunteer with The National Trust. They’re trying to clear rhododendrons from the valley sides as they’re taking over and killing the native moss and ferns. We’re no gardeners but we’re pretty good at destroying things so we thought this would be our cup of tea!

Considering how ridiculously windy it was (at one point Peggy got blown over) the girls did amazingly well working in very tough conditions. They both loved using the hand pick-axe to get some roots out and they were very handy for piling up everything we’d ripped up. By the end of the day, you could clearly seen where the army of 20 or so volunteers had been. Fingers crossed, that patch can become rhododendron free. I guess we’ll find out in summer…

An extra special visitor

Look who we saw when we drew back the curtains this morning! We watched it for ages before it disappeared off. We’ve taken to putting food out for the birds/squirrels just by our patio door so we can see the creatures up close. We weren’t expecting this though!

Aggie tried to do it in the garden but found it really hard. We watched several YouTube videos of modern Mayans playing it. It’s ... Read more
