If Carlsberg did home ed….

This week has been wonderful. In fact, I’d class it as one of my favourite weeks in the 2.5 years we’ve been doing this.

I’m a big analyser and my own harshest critic. So, why do I think this has been such a good week?

  • We’ve had no days out or extra workshops this week. We’ve done a lot of those recently. I must admit, probably too many. This week we’ve been allowed to follow our own natural rhythm and moods with no places to be at particular times (other than the standard things we do every week). We’ve felt a lot calmer for it.
  • We’ve been up, dressed and ready to start learning before 8am. On one day, Aggie was doing maths at 7.15am. We’ve then worked right through until lunch and enjoyed relaxing afternoons doing whatever our mood and energy levels allowed.
  • We’ve cooked food together and enjoyed long, random chats in the kitchen whilst we’ve been at work. We’ve put the world to rights.
  • We’ve done lots of short sessions on pretty much every academic subject this week and I’ve done a lot of different things with each girl separately. We’ve achieved so much and finished a lot of things off. Content rich, punchy sessions have been the order of the week and they’ve been great fun yet productive.
  • I put a lot of planning into this week’s activities. I know planning isn’t for everyone but I’ve always found that the more I put in, the more the girls get out. That’s the way it works for us.

I won’t lie – I’m absolutely exhausted. I’ve worked harder this week than I ever did in paid employment. I’ve not stopped all week or had much time to myself. And the week’s not over yet; I’ve got a weekend of more planning for next week.

Would I change any of this though – not on your Nelly! This is the biggest challenge of my life and I’m throwing everything I’ve got at it. Some weeks are hard. Some very hard. Some days I think I’m failing everyone. Home edding requires energy in bucket loads and I don’t always have that. But this week has been wonderful and I want to celebrate that. Well done to me!!

2023/24 planning is under way!

Everyone starts off their planning with a Venn Diagram, right?! I’ve been doing bits here and there but planning starts in earnest tomorrow. As you can see from this chart, I’ve got a lot to plan! The girls don’t particularly like cross-curricula projects; they like to do subjects separately and a lot of them! They ... Read more
