Latin

I adore Latin. I studied it for GCSE and A level and very nearly did a degree in it. I love the mixture of learning a language (which I only needed to be able to read), the historical context and the literature studies too. It was the perfect blend of everything I loved at school.

Have I made the girls do Latin??? …Sort of! It was my intention that we did it to at least KS3 level but it’s ended up becoming a subject that both girls really enjoy and are now doing for GCSE. Peggy is especially keen after loving Classical Civilisation GCSE so much; she’s even mentioned possibly doing classics at University.

For KS2 (7-11yrs) we used Minimus and Minimus Secundus which offer a fantastic introduction to the Latin language and Roman culture.

For KS3 (11-14yrs), we moved onto the De Romanis series which has proven a perfect fit alongside GCSEs in Classical Civilisation and Ancient History. I felt totally unfaithful abandoning Caecilius who features in the Cambridge Latin Course – I used those textbooks throughout my school life – but I’m very glad we took the leap to these different textbooks.

For GCSE Latin, we’ll be finishing the De Romanis series, so completing books 1 to 3, and then adding in additional work for the language, literature and culture components.
