On our way back from Alnwick we called in at The Forbidden Corner to stretch our legs and to have some lunch. I’ve often seen this place advertised and it’s won plenty of awards, so we thought we’d go and see what it was like.
What a delightfully peculiar place! It calls itself “the strangest place in the world” and there is definitely some truth in that! It’s described as “a large labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises”. On arrival, you’re given a very basic map (so as not to give too much away) and a picture list of things to find. You basically then head off to find them and tick them off your list.
There are lots of different paths to go down, doors to go through and tunnels to explore. We didn’t find everything on the list so we must have missed an entrance somewhere! The grounds included beautiful gardens and the view from the veranda was stunning.
There were also some interactive bits but we won’t reveal too much in case it spoils any future visit. There is quite a large playground on the way out and a large cafe where we enjoyed a hot chocolate and treat each.
Our top tip for visiting
It’s definitely a place to stick together in your group. I opted not to go down a particularly tight staircase but then I couldn’t find the family again for a bit as they came out somewhere completely different to where I expected! If you don’t stay together, you will lose each other and find it hard to be reunited. But perhaps that’s all part of the fun…
What age range is it suitable for?
The girls really enjoyed our visit, as did us adults. So I’d say it’s suitable for any age but do keep small children within sight otherwise you WILL lose them!
How long were we there?
We spent about 1.5 hours exploring the grounds before having a well-deserved rest in the cafe for half an hour or so.
How much does it cost?
As at May 2023 the prices were:
• Adults: £16.50
• Senior Citizens (age 60+): £15.50
• Children aged 4 – 15: £14.50
• Children under 4 enter for free.
• Family (2 adults + 2 children): £54.00
But do check their website for up to date information.
Is there a cafe?
There is a large cafe building at the entrance/exit building which serves a good range of food from pies, soup and jacket potatoes to burgers and kids’ meals; there were no dishes over £10 when we went. They also have separate vegan and gluten free menus. You can see sample menus on their website.
