Tour of an Amazon Fulfilment Centre

I got this idea from a Facebook post at the start of 2022 and couldn’t book on a tour until November 2022 so this wasn’t a trip on a whim! It was most definitely worth the wait and the trek over to Doncaster though. We unintentionally booked their very last tour of 2022 so we came home with a slighter larger goodie bag than usual which was a bonus!

There are only three fulfilment centres in the UK offering free tours now: Dunfermline, Peterborough and Doncaster. You simply register online via The Amazon Tour website and turn up for free on the day you’ve booked.

We were warmly welcomed by the tour team on arrival and briefed on safety before entering the warehouse. We were each given headphones so we could hear our guide but we could also ask questions through them too.

We spent just over an hour walking around the warehouse on a set path looking at each stage of the process from an item coming into the warehouse from suppliers and then out again to customers. The Doncaster centre deals with large-sized goods so it was all about TVs, bikes and huge bags of animal feed rather than books and stationery items.

The guide, Adam, was incredibly informative and he openly answered any questions fired at him. We were so impressed with all the engineering and computer systems. It opened the girls’ eyes, especially Peggy’s, to all the design work that goes into the equipment, machines and computers.

We loved this tour. It was something totally different and a real eye-opener to how things in the real world happen. We definitely recommend it!

Destroying rhododendrons with The National Trust

On what can only be described as a totally wild day, we ventured up in the moors above Marsden to volunteer with The National Trust. They’re trying to clear rhododendrons from the valley sides as they’re taking over and killing the native moss and ferns. We’re no gardeners but we’re pretty good at destroying things ... Read more
