MathsCity in Leeds

We all went on the train to MathsCity in Leeds this week. MathsCity was a brilliant experience because there was a lot to see and do. We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves which was great because we could do whatever activities we fancied. There were many things to do and many of ... Read more

Map reading course and plane crash sites

When I saw Tony of Riley’s Outdoor Adventure was running a map reading course, we got signed up straight away. There were four sessions which involved learning how to navigate with an OS map and compass, how to use six-figure grid references and generally how to find your way in various conditions and using landscape ... Pendle Hill and Clitheroe Castle

A day of action and archaeology in deepest darkest Lancashire as we took the theme of Macbeth’s witches and ran with it all the way up Pendle Hill (well, not literally). The day before, in a rare bout of forward-planning, we spent part of the day making tasty goods for our picnic. Aggie made pasties ... Read more

Victoria Baths

This was another brilliant find on Eventbrite. All four us went into Manchester for an hour-long tour of the Victoria Baths in Manchester. What an impressive building! The volunteer guide was really friendly and told us lots of interesting facts about the baths and their restoration. The girls were particularly interested in the segregation of ... Read more

RHS Garden Bridgewater

On such a gorgeous sunny day, we ventured out to the new RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford with Grandma. We went armed with our cameras so the girls would be kept entertained whilst us grown-ups appreciated the gardens. The girls took some amazing pictures, especially Peggy. We were there for a good couple of hours ... Read more

Going in search of bats!

Sometimes, hours spent on Facebook can be productive! I spotted an event on Facebook which I thought we’d enjoy – a Bat Walk in Worsley Woods. This event was free (although donations of £1.50 each were suggested to cover the cost of batteries) and was run by the Salford Ranger Team (Salford Ranger Team | ... Read more

Real Rock Climbing at Windgather Rocks

Peggy loves her rock climbing but has never actually climbed real outdoor rocks before so we thought we needed to correct that. I found out about Tony at Riley Outdoor Adventures through his Facebook page and so I booked Peggy onto one of his Home Ed climbing session. Tony was great with the kids and ... Read more

There’s been a murder in Dobcross!

With hot chocolate in a flask and a box of homemade cornflake cakes in our rucksack, we ventured out to have a go at a murder mystery trail from Treasure Trails. It involved a circular 2.4 mile walk round the village of Dobcross finding answers to clues to work out who murdered Morris Blackamore, the ... Read more

Yorkshire Sculpture Park Visit

We had a great afternoon at YSP. We’ve been coming here since the girls were in pushchairs and it’s always an enjoyable day out. We particularly enjoyed seeing the Damien Hirst sculptures; they certainly generated lots of discussions. The girls came home itching to get drawing in their sketch books.
